Malai Kitchen

My brand new friend from Meso Maya suggested we have lunch at Malai Kitchen over the weekend. I know absolutely nothing about Thai or Vietnamese food. Not one single thing. I’ve spent most of my life avoiding this kind of food without having a valid reason. Even worse, I’ve been living life with a secret. Until five minutes ago, I didn’t know the definition of banh mi. This banh mi mystery began when everyone on twitter kept tweeting about where to find the best banh mi in town. These tweets hurt my feelings because I secretly didn’t know the definition of banh mi. I kept forgetting to investigate because I’m convinced I barely cared. After searching Yahoo, the world’s best search engine, I finally found out that banh mi is the Vietnamese term for bread. Go figure.

The first thing to love about Malai Kitchen is their Saturday and Sunday Brunch. Mimosas make me nervous when people make them the night before. The end result is sometimes a load of scary pulp infested orange juice with minimal champagne. Malai Kitchen makes their mimosas on the spot using real orange juice. This mimosa win is then delivered in a freezing cold frosted glass. Who needs a strawberry when there’s frost freaking out all over the glass? There’s nothing to dislike about Malai Kitchen’s mimosas.

The enclosed patio at Malai Kitchen is heated. It was freezing outside during lunch, so it was exciting to feel warm on the patio. This excited me way more than it should have. Things were going so well I couldn’t help but think the service would ruin all dreams of lunch glory. Not so. Our server was as good as it gets. He suggested different items, as well as assuring me, from the bottom of his heart, that there would be no pork products in any dish I ordered. It was a promise that he was going to keep. I felt sure of this.

We started with shrimp spring rolls stuffed with rice noodles and pickled bean sprouts. The kitchen is not messing around with the presentation of each dish. My brand new friend ordered Drunken Noodles, which she said is a personal all-time favorite. I had Thai Eggs Benedict for the main course and couldn’t have been happier. Even though hollandaise is a part of the process, this dish finds a way to feel healthy. This dish truly is one of my new breakfast favorites in Dallas. The cheese-rice grits made me equally as happy as the rest. Everything about Malai Kitchen makes me want to be a better person. Heart.

IMPORTANT DISCLOSURE: I only paid for half of my spring roll appetizer. This means the other half was free. My brand new friend shared this appetizer with me, so she felt like paying half was the right thing to do. If I didn’t like her paying for half of the spring roll appetizer, then I would have said I didn’t like her paying for half of the spring roll appetizer. My opinion is mine and you can’t have it. END OF THIS IMPORTANT BLOGGER DISCLOSURE INFORMING EVERYONE HALF OF MY SPRING ROLL APPETIZER WAS FREE.
