Fried Egg Sandwich

A group of friends invited us to Tried & True for brunch last Sunday. Problem: Tried & True doesn’t serve brunch. We decided to walk next door to Capitol Pub. I’ve been there for drinks a few times, but never considered having brunch.

Our server wasn’t always around. She’d suddenly appear just as we felt in need of something. There were guys making sure everyone had water, as well as helping pre-bus tables on the patio. We never had to want for anything except some kind of sauce and that lasted about 2 minutes. There’s almost nothing better than the gift of great service.

While studying the menu, it was shocking to see cream cheese listed as an ingredient on the fried egg sandwich. This is crazy! This information gave me butterflies! Who thought of this? Have I been living a sheltered fried egg sandwich life? Maybe other people have known this cream cheese on a fried egg sandwich secret for years. This could be common and the unlucky people just don’t know it. Along with the cream cheese are two eggs, basil, lettuce, tomato, and Canadian bacon served on a ciabatta roll. I asked for the Canadian bacon to arrive on the side. A side arrival means this pig can be given to one lucky bruncher. With all this cream cheese excitement, I decided not to ask for the usual side of mayo.

While my husband was wearing his brand new Tito’s hat, given as a birthday gift, I noticed him locked in some kind of street trance. Why was he staring at the street? He wasn’t looking at moving cars because his head was motionless. After annoying him to a point of no return, he finally revealed that my excitement over cream cheese was completely wearing him out. At that moment I decided to end all cream cheese conversations.

After everyone’s food was delivered, my fried egg sandwich was just sitting there. I knew my husband was just waiting for me to joyfully lift the roll to reveal the cream cheese resting beneath. I decided to hand him my side of Canadian bacon before opening my present. The Canadian bacon pleased him, so I figured it was my turn. Um, I can hardly talk about what happened next.

I lifted the roll with the highest cream cheese expectations ever, only to gasp in cream cheese disbelief. Where is the cream cheese? Why is my sandwich pitiful? Imagine the massive level of cream cheese let down happening at this table. More importantly, where’s the chef that mentally agreed with himself that this is an adequate amount of cream cheese to apply? This chef has taken for granted the feelings that certain humans have regarding cream cheese on a fried egg sandwich. This chef single handedly stomped on my cream cheese dream.

I decided to move on with my life and ask for the always reliable side of mayo. Besides, my husband did not feel like having any kind of cream cheese drama. He had all of his friends sitting at the table and they had everything they needed. The last thing he wanted to deal with was cream cheese chaos. I kept all of this anguish deep inside myself. It was a secret never to be spoken.

Without warning, this bacon was placed on my left arm.

Another bruncher ordered house made corned beef hash with scrambled eggs. My husband ordered the capitol burger. This is a sirloin burger with caramelized onions, Dijon mustard, hickory smoked bacon, and a choice of Maytag blue or Cotswold cheese.

All I know is he picked up the hickory smoked bacon and placed it on my left arm while I was pondering in cream cheese thought. Do you really think this was a good time to play a bacon joke on my arm? No. I would rather someone stick a rattlesnake on my face.

Moving right along…

Capitol Pub likes when people bring their dogs to the patio. They have a long table in the corner with lots of dog roaming room. The crowd has always seemed friendly and relaxed each time we’ve been in for drinks and an appetizer. Capitol Pub is a cozy place on Henderson with plenty of beer.
