Hibiscus

We met a group of friends at Hibiscus for dinner Saturday night. This place is way bigger than I originally thought. We followed the hostess forever, passing a second bar before walking even longer. We finally sat down at the very last round table in the back of the restaurant.

Hibiscus doesn’t feel stuffy, rather a healthy mix of all kinds of people. I like the big, heavy door leading to the dark dining room where there’s a perfect view of the open kitchen. There’s so much to like about this place. Maybe it’s because our server was excellent. It’s weird to not have bad service lately. It makes me appreciate good service even more. He was knowledgeable about the food and wine list. He even told me to hold back on ordering a second Jonah crab dip for the table because we seemed to have quite a few apps already ordered. Good service is not a given. Kudos to Hibiscus for having experienced servers.

Everyone was very happy with all but one appetizer. The green beans & asparagus appetizer is probably the worst appetizer that I can remember— ever. The taste is hard to describe. I have no idea what’s wrong with this dish, but someone needs to figure it out. Almost everyone made some kind of face after taking a bite. If more than two people at a table of six make a bad appetizer face, then it’s a bad appetizer.

I ordered the wood grilled lobster. This dish is around thirty dollars, which is scary. It seemed like a special dinner, so I justified ordering it. The lobster was cooked to perfection. There’s nothing better than the side I ordered! Nothing! The deep dish mac & cheese will make your toes curl. Even though it felt like the heaviest side in the world, I finished everything without feeling sickly stuffed. Everyone was going nuts over the mac & cheese.

How fabulous is our server? After hearing me talk about how much I loved the deep dish mac & cheese, he brought over a side order in a to-go box as he dropped off our check. This kind of service is next level. We all left with fond feelings of Hibiscus. There was no drama. No story. Nothing much at all. Just a nice, quiet dinner with good friends and great service.

IMPORTANT DISCLOSURE: I received free mac & cheese. Just because our server gave me free mac & cheese does not mean I liked the tempura green beans & asparagus. If I liked the tempura green beans & asparagus, then I would have said I liked the tempura green beans & asparagus. My opinion is mine and you can’t have it. END OF THIS IMPORTANT BLOGGER DISCLOSURE INFORMING EVERYONE MY MAC & CHEESE WAS FREE.
